Poems by Rilke with Translations by Rose Mary Boehm

I am, you who are fearful

I am, you who are fearful. Can you not hear me
surging towards you with all my senses?
My feelings, which have found wings,
circle your face in flawless white.
Can you not see my soul, standing close
before you, clad in a robe of silence?
Does not my springtime prayer ripen
in your gaze as on a tree?

If you are the dreamer, I am your dream.
But if you wish to wake, I am your will
and shall become the mighty lord of all glory,
arching like a starry stillness
over the wondrous city of time.

Autumn Day

Lord: it is time. The summer was immense.
Cast your shadow over the sundials,
and loose the winds upon the fields.
Command the last fruits to be full;
grant them two more days of southern sun,
urge them to perfection and drive
the final sweetness into the rich wine.
Whoever has no house now will build no more.
Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time,
will stay awake, read, write long letters
and along avenues wander to and fro,
restless, when the leaves are whirling.

Herbsttag

Befiehl den letzten Früchten voll zu sein;
